The Record – 31 August 2025

Welcome to Worship

This Sunday at 10am
+  Being the last Sunday of the month, this Sunday is the day for our monthly, Last Breakfast. If you can, please bring along some food to share with others for breakfast or brunch. An opportunity to receive and share some nourishing insights around the tables.

This month we’ll be joined by artist/anthropologist Kendall Bryant, as we continue on from last week’s Anniversary Service and moving from buildings to furniture, as we explore what activities we might continue to do around our tables into the future, and who might be missing.

+ 2.30-4.30pm Art in the Barn. Artists Joseph and Sarah Zhang continue conducting (in Mandarin and English) a series of twelve free art classes.

+ 7.30pm Our Deacons are having their monthly meeting. Contact chairperson, Shueh-Wah Kennedy, if you have any matters you would like the Deacons to consider.

Community News

+ The Box Hill Community Choir is inviting you to join them for coffee at 11am this Saturday, 30 August, at Churchill’s Café, 13-15 Hamilton Street, Mont Albert before you enjoy their music as they perform from 12 midday to 12.30pm in the Mont Albert Village.

+ It was good to welcome back several former members and friends to Box Hill Baptist last Sunday for our 100th Church Building anniversary. One of those people was former pastor of our church, Rev Kevin Purvis. This year Kevin received a volunteer award from the City of Boroondara for his work as President of Compassionate Friends Victoria, a ministry in which he and Jenny Purvis are heavily involved.

+ Thanks to Michelle Chapman for organising the Anniversary cake and Lorraine Mitchell and Eddie Chapman for arranging the photographic display in the Gallery related to the opening and development of the church building in 1925 and beyond. Enjoy the relics and photos. You might see yourself in one of the pics.

+ Eddie is taking annual leave and will be away and out of town from Monday 1 September to Wednesday 10 September.

Pointers for Prayer

+ This week two Victorian police went to work and were shot dead. Pray for their grieving families and colleagues.

+ Pray for Raelene Lilies and Diane Heagney who are both having time in hospital.

+ Our Deacons would appreciate your prayers for wisdom as they give leadership and make decisions about the life and direction of our church.

+ Pray that the Box Hill Community Choir will encourage and uplift those they sing to at their performances and in the giving they will grow in the friendship, joy and wellbeing that comes in contributing to something bigger than oneself.

+ Prophetic Ministry: “The prophet is not an outsider throwing rocks, nor a comfortable insider who defends the status quo; but one who lives precariously with two perspectives held tightly together in a loving and creative tension: the faithful insider and the critical outsider.” Richard Rohr.

Listen to Whitley lecturer Jason Goroncy’s new song, Sunflowers, inspired by and written for the people of Ukraine.

Small Groups @ BHBC

Box Hill Baptist Church runs a number of small groups which create opportunities to build friendships, study the Bible and other resources, pray and strengthen our spiritual journeys.

If you are interested in any of the groups below, feel welcome to contact the convenor, or speak to one of our pastors. (And if you’d like to be part of a group but these don’t work for you, come and speak to us and we’ll see if we can start something new!)

  • Bible & Chat: Currently each Tuesday, 7:15pm for 7.30pm start at the Village Well (5 Ellingworth Pde). The group normally reflects on a Scripture passage for the following Sunday service. Convenor: Geoff Pound
  • KYB (Know Your Bible): Tuesdays fortnightly via Zoom. (Convenor: Helen Timms)

Next Sunday 7th September at 10am.

+ This is the first Sunday in Spring and also Father’s Day. On the first Sunday of the month we celebrate The Lord’s Supper. It is also our custom on this day to include non-perishable food for needy people as part of our offering.

+ Preacher: Geoff Pound

+ Scripture Reading: Ezra 3: 10-14

+ Service Theme: Shouting, Singing, Worship and Weeping. We reflect on the mighty din when the Jewish people returned from exile and dedicated the rebuilding of the Jerusalem temple. We will think of the ways that worship in our own church in the last 124 years has been a struggle and a blessing by worshippers who want to both sing for joy and lament with tears.
